It's been a really tough week on the interstate. This is one of the worst that we can recall.
On August 13 in Lincoln County, a semi versus pickup crash near Sutherland occurred where a semi struck a parked Nissan pickup truck on the shoulder. An adult female passenger was killed, and a juvenile passenger was airlifted to Omaha with serious injuries. The driver, Fazali Sharapov, was arrested for motor vehicle homicide.
August 13, that same day, two more accidents. Later, while responding to that fiery accident involving the pickup and semi, a Nebraska State Trooper providing traffic control was rear-ended by a Buick Enclave. Thankfully, the trooper only suffered minor injuries, and the driver was cited for failing to move over an open alcohol container, no registration, and no insurance.
Also on the 13th, a flatbed semi truck merging onto traffic was struck from behind by another semi pulling a cargo van. The impact sparked a massive fire that destroyed the trailer and caused a fatality. The moving semi truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. That was near the Brady-Maxwell exit.
And just yesterday, on Sunday, a severe four-vehicle crash occurred in the westbound lanes near Mile Marker 422 on I-80. Three people from the same vehicle died, and several others were injured, including two who were transported in critical condition. The collision closed the interstate for several hours, and the crash is under investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol.
A deadly week on I-80. Please use caution.
